This is a pet topic of mine as it is given lip service by many capable people in the field and few choose to delve. (my apologies to those that do). It could be that it is a difficult issue and there’s a danger that some might view it with a suspicion generally reserved for crystal fanatics. For the record, I like them as an adjunct to the work, they focus attention.
The truthis that every human on the planet is an artist, a creator at some level. We strongly encourage it in infants, toddlers and early school attenders then spend a short time driving it out of anyone not showing signs of ‘the artist’- whoever and whatever that may be and leave it at that. The result is a huge percentage of young people, by the age of, say, 8 years, believe that they have no artistic gifts and spend a lifetime with a vague insubstantial, existential ache that is never satisfied.
ALL human beings are creative beings. The biggest mistake in this ‘outcomes’ and ‘key indicators’ driven world, is that judgement is made based on whether any money is likely to ensue from this ‘potential’. If not, then forget it. The result is the Western society we now have. Angst driven, depressive, unsatisfied and unfulfilled.
This is precisely the pool from which addictions are cultivated and which now challenge us at every level; including the medical. We spend a huge and justified amount of time and money trying to encourage people onto the running track and those few sports fields left after the big sell off in the 1980s ( and which continues by all accounts). We are paying a huge price in the rising obesity levels for the marginalisation of healthy sporting activity and an immense resource is now being flung at the problem. I suggest a similar effort ought to be made with a re energising of the creative juices that are being left in stagnant internal pools to corrode the soul. Unless we do this, societal malaise will continue to draw into itself in the manner of a malignant and remorseless black hole.
So, in my view, creativity is worthy of exploration with fresh eyes.
It requires going back to first principles and NOT doing something, or attempting it, because of its financial potential. The key is to do it because it needs to be done, or, more importantly, might be fun and energising. The doing is the justification, the explanation , the outcome and the being. When that is achieved anything that follows, and it will, will lead in the next necessary direction. That direction might produce a career, or it may simply have been the opening to the next phase. At its very best, if diligence is applied; one’s life direction can be the outcome and it may bear no resemblance to the initial steps.
What I describe here is ‘living’ as opposed to surviving. It may not answer all life’s questions, challenges and problems, but it will reduce the risk of falling into existential depression and the need to medicate the soul with contrary medicines- alcohol, recreational drugs:anti-depressants and sedatives inappropriately prescribed ,leaving us with the current confusion and strangely urgent need for someone to blame. The fault is us- society- falling into the addictive trap and feeling better by scapegoating certain elements ,identified by their using preferences.
This is the basic premise and I will explore each aspect in coming reflections. Go well, explore your creativity. I will also look at methods of achieving this that work.
